Fresh and Local - the True Taste of Malta
A Taste of the Harvest: Your Maltese Fresh Produce Guide for September
September in Malta is a month of beautiful contradictions. The fierce heat of summer begins to soften, the sea is still warm, and our local farms offer an incredible harvest that gives us the best of both seasons. It’s a time for savouring the last of summer’s sweet treasures while welcoming the first comforting, earthy flavours of autumn.
Here at ta-malta.com, we are excited to bring you the full bounty of this transitional month. Here’s your guide to what’s fresh, flavourful, and essential for your kitchen this September.
The Stars of the September Harvest
While we say a fond farewell to the peak-summer produce, September brings its own superstars to the forefront, boasting rich colours and deep, complex flavours.
Pomegranates (Rummien)
If September has a jewel, it is the magnificent pomegranate. The first local rummien of the season are now ready, their tough skins protecting hundreds of glittering, ruby-red seeds. Each seed is a burst of sweet and tangy juice, packed with powerful antioxidants. Sprinkle them over salads, yogurt, or roasted vegetables for a touch of elegance and a vibrant crunch.

Pumpkin & Squash (Qargħa Ħamra)
The true sign that autumn is on its way! The first of the season’s pumpkins and squashes are here. Our local qargħa ħamra is perfect for making the traditional sweet Maltese pumpkin pie, ‘Torta tal-Qargħa Ħamra’. Butternut squash is also arriving, ready to be roasted until sweet and nutty, or blended into a silky, comforting soup for the first cooler evenings.

Grapes & Figs (Għeneb u Tin)
September is the final, glorious month for local grapes and figs. The grapes are now at their absolute sweetest, perfect for eating fresh or for creating a stunning cheese board. The last of the season’s figs are rich and jammy, an indulgent treat to be savoured before they’re gone for another year.
