Fresh and Local - the True Taste of Malta
Savouring the Last Taste of Summer: Your Maltese Fresh Produce Guide for Late August
As the long, sun-drenched days of August begin to blend into the promise of September, the fields and farms across Malta and Gozo are offering a spectacular bounty. This is a magical time of transition—a chance to savour the absolute peak of summer’s sweetness while welcoming the first rich, comforting flavours of the coming autumn harvest.
Here at ta-malta.com, we are passionate about bringing the very best of what’s in season directly from our local farmers to your kitchen. Here’s a guide to what you should be filling your baskets with right now.
The Stars of Late Summer – Don’t Miss Out!
The heat of the Maltese summer concentrates the sugars in our favourite fruits, making them unbelievably sweet and juicy. This is your last chance to enjoy them at their absolute best.
Watermelons & Melons (Dulliegħ u Bettiegħ)
There is nothing that says summer in Malta quite like a slice of cold, crisp watermelon (dulliegħa). Our local watermelons are heavy, sweet, and bursting with hydrating juice. Alongside them, the fragrant orange melons (bettieħa) are at their peak, offering a perfumed, honeyed sweetness that is perfect for a refreshing breakfast or served with a slice of prosciutto for a classic antipasto.

Prickly Pears (Bajtar tax-Xewk)
The iconic fruit of the Maltese landscape! The bajtar tax-xewk is a true local delicacy. Once you get past their spiky exterior, you’re rewarded with a flesh that is incredibly refreshing, with a unique flavour often described as a cross between watermelon and strawberry. They are packed with vitamins and are the perfect healthy treat on a hot afternoon.

The Arrival of the Harvest – Autumn is Calling
As August closes, the first signs of the autumn harvest begin to appear, bringing with them a new palette of rich and luscious flavours.
Figs (Tin)
Late August is a spectacular time for fresh figs (tin) in Malta. The ficus carica, or the common fig, offers a rich, jam-like texture and a deep, honeyed sweetness that is simply luxurious. They are a true powerhouse of flavour and nutrition, rich in fibre and minerals. Enjoy them fresh, sliced onto your morning porridge, or serve them on a platter with some fresh local ġbejniet (cheeselets) for a perfect sweet and savoury combination.

Whether you prefer the deep, rich flavour of red grapes or the crisp, refreshing bite of the white varieties, now is the time to enjoy them. They are the perfect healthy snack and an elegant addition to any cheese board.
